When times get tough, it may seem wasteful to splurge on unnecessary gifts. If money is tight in your family consider exchanging gifts this year that are more practical. You can help out your relatives and loved ones by giving gifts that will save them money on regular items they need to use everyday. If you know someone who loves to work around the yard or loves to enjoy the outdoors, consider giving garden tools, kayak anchors, kayak leashes or camping equipment. This will save them money on items they will be using and buying on their own anyway. They may need to cut back on other things to afford the things they enjoy, but if you can help them out with some new equipment or tools, they can go on enjoying what they love without sacrificing things they need.

Household items are another great gift for those you love. When things are going well for everyone, they may view something like a new toaster or vacuum cleaner as impersonal. However, when budgets are tight and appliances continue to break down, one of these new household items make bring them more joy than they have experienced in a long time. Look around for great deals on items like this during the holidays, you can often find high-quality appliances for a low bargain price around this time of year and offer your loved one a brand new item they may not otherwise be able to enjoy the convenience of on their own.

Regardless of how bad the economy gets, people still need to eat. Grocery prices are on the rise and if you want to help out someone you love, you can offset the high cost of a trip to the supermarket with a gift card. It is surprising how great it feels to buy a months supply of groceries without spending a dime. If you are not worried about your loved ones shopping for groceries, treat them to a meal out. A restaurant gift card makes a great gift.

If you know someone planning an upcoming trip somewhere, help them out with the expenses. While they may need to cut back on their vacation expenses otherwise, if you help them out they can enjoy a few splurges during their trip. Consider giving your gift recipient cash with a note about contributing to the vacation or you can actually give them gift cards that are specific to their upcoming trip. This gives you a chance to really feel as if you are helping and you are a part of their vacation.

Finally, consider giving charity gifts instead. If you feel blessed and times are not as tough for you and your family as they are for others, you can share your joy with other families. This is a great way to help kids learn about the rewards of giving. Consider buying toys for children who are sick or needy and who would enjoy a variety of new things to brighten their holiday season.
