Most people who take alcohol inevitably tries once or twice to drive their vehicle while knowing that they should not be behind a wheel. When this happens over several times, it is obvious that they will be caught in a police trap which will cause a lot of stress and complicate their lives unimaginably. When the inevitable happens, a DUI attorney is needed to find a way through the problems that will certainly follow. A DUI lawyer will know just what to do to ensure that everything will go as smoothly as possible.

We all know how the story goes, we are at a function and someone presses one last drink on us before we have to leave. If we are having fun, we often lose count of what we have imbibed and, if we feel ok, we just take a risk and get behind the wheel of the car. Of course, alcohol takes some time to get into the system so it may be on the journey home that the effects will start to be felt. Anyone who has some sense, and that tends to be the non drinkers for sure, would pull over and hire a taxi. What most people do is to carry on without thinking twice. That is, until a policeman spots them driving erratically.

Once pulled over, they often engage the driver in road side sobriety tests to work out if they have been drinking or not. What the erstwhile driver does not realize is that they do not have to do this test right there. Instead, they can insist upon having these tests done at the station. Not only will this give them time to process any alcohol that they have taken, it will also allow them to gather their thoughts before having the tests done. Indeed, this hiatus in the arrest process could well take them below the level that is permitted in that particular state.

On top of this, many police cars are now equipped with camera equipment which films everything that is going on at the roadside. Imagine seeing the boss doing walking and balancing exercises on these TV shows which love to embarrass the public in the name of entertainment! Even though faces are often disguised, voices can be a giveaway and can surely ruin the reputation of those with high positions.

Once the arrest has been made, and the tests show that there is an excess of alcohol in the blood, the accused must contact an expert to take them through the court procedure. If the level of alcohol is just over the limit, the expert may well be able to plead the case down to a lower level.

Also, if the accused is on any medication, this can also be brought before the court since alcohol may have exacerbated the situation when he unwittingly took one drink on top of it. All this has to be explained by the expert so that any punishment is kept to a minimum.
